Rail Trail
Lilydale, VIC
About The Rail Trail
Distance from Melbourne - About an hour east of Melbourne
Facilities - Water refill stations, unsure about toilets along the trail
Accessibility - Carparks are easily accessible, the trail is relatively flat, some small inclines, well maintained gravel or concrete footpaths

The rail trail runs from Lilydale to Warburton, 40km trail suitable for walkers, bike rides and horses. The trail follows the historical railway, beginning from behind Lilydale station and finishing in Warburton.
I didn't try to attempt the entire length, but decided to do a short section. I began in Lilydale, it took a little while to work out where to park and google maps gave very confusing directions, but I pulled in near the footy oval and began my walk. The rail trail can be broken into smaller sections, as seen on https://www.yarraranges.vic.gov.au/Lists/Parks-Facilities/Lilydale-to-Warburton-Rail-Trail. I walked a total of about 4k, so not the entire of the Lilydale to Mount Evelyn length, which is 6.9km in total.
Packing tips
Wear comfortable clothes which are appropriate for the weather, shoes, take a drink bottle, hat and sunglasses would also be advised.
Things I wish I had taken
I was in such a rush to get out of the house I didn't grab a bottle. I managed on my short walk but I wouldn't have wanted to walk much further.
Things I could have left at home
nil
Costs including entry, site costs and food (if camping)
nil
Items/equipment needed
comfortable shoes, I just walked in runners
Sights in nearby towns, attractions and things to do
I didn't get any information about Lilydale, but I know there is a nice ice cream store, which I believe is called cookies and cream ice creamery, and there are a few nice restaurants and cafes along the strip shops, I've also tried Bom Gosto which was lovely.
Things I may do differently next time
I will definitely bring a drink bottle, possibly try and walk with someone as well, company would be nice. I would also like to try the different sections and ride my bike as well (once I get my bike rack attached to my car!)
Until my next adventure,
Alex
